We believe that politics starts with the search for truth and that politicians should know what they are talking about.
In order to hold them to account, we also need to be informed. That’s the mission for St Austell pizza and which has been running at 6pm on the first Tuesday of every month since March 2016. We have been hosted by the St Austell Arts Centre but now provide virtual sessions vie Zoom. Although pizza & politics is sponsored by St Austell & Newquay Liberal Democrats, the meetings are open to people from all political persuasions and none!
Presentations are given by passionate and knowledgeable people. The aim is to inform and discuss.
We have heard from speakers representing Cosgarne Hall, the homeless shelter, Heligan Gardens, Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen project and Wildworks. Many other speakers have briefed us on projects as varied as health and social care, affordable housing, farming, fisheries, reducing the use of plastic, Syrian refugees, nuclear energy, universal credit, education and deep thermal drilling. Many of our sessions last year were on different aspects of climate change.
We draw heavily on the rich seam of talent in Cornwall and are never short of speakers from Cornwall who can bring a local context to every subject.
Recent sessions have included:
1st Sep What do we want from the new Leader? (LibDem Leader elected 27 Aug)
6th Oct Sammie Dalrymple on What it means to be ‘BAME’
3rd Nov Robert Irwin Being Liberal or popular, can you be both?
